Mockumentary Genre

A mockumentary is a type of movie or TV series which depicts events that really happened but presents them as a documentary would. The word mockumentary is a combination of the word mock and documentary. These are usually made to analyze or comment on real, current events and issues by using a fictional setting, or to make fun the documentary form itself. They are usually comedic which a lot of humorous moments.

Mockumentaries are often presented as historical documentaries, including B roll and dicussuing past events. The term mockumentary which originated in the 1960s, was popularized in the mid-1980s when director Rob Reiner used it in interviews to describe his film ‘This Is Spinal Tap’.

Mockumentaries are usually partially or even fully improvised, this is the kind of approach I am taking to my FMP as the questions are not improvised but the answers and the cutaway scenes are. This is because an unscripted style of acting helps to maintain the idea of reality. Mockumentaries often avoid having laugh tracks to help maintain the atmosphere although there has been past exceptions.
