Modern Family is an American TV mockumentary family sitcom created by Christopher Lloyd. The show looks into the lives of Jay Pritchett and his family, all of whom live in Los Angeles.
The family is made up of Jay’s second wife, their son and stepson, as well as his two adult children and their spouses and children. It was presented as a mockumentary but is a little different as the characters frequently break the fourth wall.
Modern Family uses a technique called ‘shaky camera’ which is a cinematic technique where the camera is constantly shaky. It is done with a handheld camera or something giving the appearance of being handheld. ‘Shaky camera’ is normally used to give the film a documentary feel. It does this by suggesting unprepared, unrehearsed filming of reality and can give a sense of instability or nervousness.
In both of these scenes the camera looks as if it’s handheld. This is an approach that I’m taking with my cutaways. In this show they occasionally cut to interviews with the characters. This is what makes it a mockumentary
